Presence of Zebra Mussels Confirmed in Lake Housatonic
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today confirmed that zebra mussels have been found in Lake Housatonic. The adult zebra mussels were found by divers working for Biodrawversity LLC, the consulting firm hired by DEEP to survey for zebra mussels in the Housatonic River system and other nearby high calcium content waters. Federal Aquatic Nuisance Species funding was used to fund this survey.

Connecticut DEEP Announces Piping Plover & Least Tern Nesting Season Results
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced the results from the 2011 piping plover and least tern nesting season. Fifty-two pairs of piping plovers nested along the Connecticut coastline during the 2011 breeding season; nine more than last year. The number of young that fledged (reached flying stage) was 71; 11 less than the 82 plovers that fledged in 2010.

As the leaves turn colors and fall off the trees and the temperatures start to get colder, most of the migrant birds have left Connecticut for their wintering grounds and many mammals have fattened up and found dens or other shelters. With the onset of the fall breeding seasons for both white-tailed deer and moose, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Wildlife Division reminds motorists to be watchful of increased deer and moose activity, especially during early morning and evening hours. September through October is the peak of the breeding season for Connecticut's small but expanding moose population whereas the breeding season (also known as "the rut") for white-tailed deer extends from late October through December.

Governor Malloy: Routine Rainwater Testing in Connecticut Shows No Concern for Public Health
Last week low levels of radioactive material were found in rainwater in Massachusetts during routine testing that is conducted by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Today, Governor Dannel P. Winter is finally beginning to lose its grip on Connecticut. This winter was severe, and the extensive snow and ice cover experienced throughout the state has greatly increased the potential for fish kills in shallow ponds and lakes. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has already received several reports of fish kills and as the ice cover on lakes and ponds recedes this year, DEP expects to receive more reports.
