Hunter Education Courses Now Available through Home Study

DEP Announces Trophy Fish Award Ceremony
Daniel Southwick’s (Millville, MA) northern pike catch, 40.5 inches long, weighing in at 19.75 lbs, was the largest northern pike in the catch-and-release category submitted to the Trophy fish Award Program in 2008. Anglers who submitted the largest fish of each species in 2009 will be recognized at a ceremony on Saturday, February 27th at the Northeast Fishing and Hunting Expo at the CT Convention Center.

CT DEP Revokes Commercial Pesticide License
Violator will pay $7,000 in civil penalties
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has revoked the commercial pesticide supervisor certification of Kenneth Bode, doing business as CPC, LLC and Curly’s Pest Control of East Haven for violating pesticide label requirements and industry standards relating to termite treatments. In addition, the action prevents Bode from operating, managing or controlling a commercial pesticide application business in any capacity and he has been ordered to pay civil penalties in the amount of $7,000.

2010 Midwinter Waterfowl Survey Results
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) conducted the annual Midwinter Waterfowl Survey on January 4, 2010. The survey is conducted throughout the Atlantic Flyway, and is used as an index of long-term wintering waterfowl trends. The Atlantic Flyway is a bird migration route that generally follows the Atlantic Coast of North America and the Appalachian Mountains. The states and Canadian provinces that make up the Atlantic Flyway all participate in the survey. In Connecticut, the survey is conducted from a helicopter and a census is obtained from the coast, the three major river systems, and selected inland lakes and reservoirs.

2009 Connecticut Firearms Deer Season Closes One of the Safest on Record
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced that with the close of the 2009 firearms deer hunting seasons on December 31, 2009, hunters in Connecticut enjoyed a second consecutive deer season without a firearm-related injury. More than 64,000 deer hunting permits are issued annually and deer hunters spend nearly 450,000 days afield each year. The only injury reported in 2009 involved a fall from a tree stand.

DEP Announces Settlements with Bridgeport Energy, LLC for Air Emissions Violations
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced it recently entered into a consent order with Bridgeport Energy, LLC to address past emission violations at the company’s power generating facility in Bridgeport. The consent order requires Bridgeport Energy to pay a $298,000 civil penalty for the alleged violations. In addition, Bridgeport Energy has paid $345,500 in past due emission fees and spent close to $1 million on the acquisition and installation of new pollution control equipment to address the violations.

On Dark Wings at Twilight
The setting sun casts long shadows, the sky darkening as twilight sets in. Suddenly, dark shadows flutter above, creatures of the night silhouetted against a dimming sky, emerging for their nightly foray. Bats! A staple of ghost stories, Hollywood fright films, and, of course, Halloween, bats often conjure up images of terror in the minds of many. However, the reality is that you are unlikely to see many bats flying around by the end of October. At this time of year, most of Connecticut’s bats have settled into their winter homes, or hibernaculas, where they will sleep until spring. And, while the scary images of bats are far from reality, the link between bats and all things terrifying does provide an excellent opportunity to shed some light on these unique mammals.

Building Shelter for Bluebirds: DEP Offers Help

DEP Announces Fall Trout Stocking

During September and October, DEP expects to release more than 36,000 trout into selected waters throughout the state. 705 Acres on Skiff Mountain Protected from Development
Six properties on Skiff Mountain in northwest Connecticut will be permanently protected from development, The Trust for Public Land announced today. DEP Reminds State Park Visitors that Fewer Lifeguards on Duty
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today reminded state residents and out of state visitors that with summer winding down and many lifeguards going back to school there are fewer of them on duty at state swimming areas. This weekend there will be no lifeguards at Wadsworth Falls in Middlefield and no lifeguards at Wharton Brook in Wallingford. All state swimming areas will have fewer lifeguards this weekend and some areas do not have lifeguards during the week either. In cases where there are no longer life guards on duty, swimming areas will be posted with signs. As always, persons entering the water should be aware of their swimming abilities and not take unnecessary risks.

UCONN, CT DEP Step Up Campaign To Find And Fight Mile-A-Minute Vine, An Invasive Plant
Scientists and staff at the University of Connecticut (UConn) and the CT Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are teaming up to tackle a problematic invasive weed. Mile-a-minute vine (Persicaria perfoliata), sometimes referred to as "the Kudzu of the North" due to its fast growth and climbing habits, was originally found in Greenwich and has since spread to fifteen towns and cities in Connecticut. A new agreement between CT DEP and UConn makes mile-a-minute vine a top-priority species.

State Mosquito Program Announces Start of Mosquito Testing for West Nile and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Viruses
The State of Connecticut Mosquito Management Program is again monitoring mosquitoes for the presence of viruses that can cause illness in people including West Nile virus (WNV) and eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) in 2009. Connecticut Families Visit Squantz Pond State Park For Fourth Annual Great Park Pursuit
Connecticut’s popular state park along the shores of Candlewood Lake in New Fairfield served as the kick-off location today for the fourth annual Great Park Pursuit. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today released the name of the boating accident victim who was recovered yesterday, May 7, 2009 at approximately 12:00 noon. The deceased was identified as Wilfredo Cayax, age 28 of New Haven, Connecticut. Additionally, the DEP identified the survivor of the accident as Hector Luis, age 41, of West Haven, Connecticut. Mr. Luis was treated at Yale New Haven Hospital for minor injuries.

Glastonbury Shooting Range Re-Opens For 2009 Season
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today that the Glastonbury Shooting Range is scheduled to re-open for supervised public use starting Saturday, May 9, 2009. The range is located within the Meshomasic State Forest off of Toll Gate Road in Glastonbury and has been closed for the winter period. Following extensive renovations completed in 2004, the range has been open during limited weekend hours for the past four seasons. The range will remain open through November 29, 2009 and will be staffed by seasonal DEP employees that are certified range safety officers.

2009 Spring Wild Turkey Hunting Season Opens May 6
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) reminds outdoorsmen and women that the 2009 Connecticut spring wild turkey hunting season will run from May 6-30. Youth hunters can also participate in a junior hunter training day on May 2, which provides an opportunity for youth hunters to learn safe and effective wild turkey hunting techniques from experienced adult mentors. This year will mark the 29th year that sportsmen have hunted turkeys in Connecticut during the modern era. The statewide turkey population is estimated at approximately 35,000 birds. Last spring, 6,617 hunters took 1,558 bearded turkeys.

DEP Reminds Residents to Be Bear Aware
With the arrival of spring, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) reminds residents to be aware of and prepare for bears that become more active this time of year looking for food, territory, and mates. The state’s bear population, which is estimated at over 300, continues to grow and expand, increasing the need for people to know how to prevent problems. In 2008, over 2,700 sightings of bears were reported from 133 of Connecticut’s 169 towns.

Prohibition On The Taking Of Alewife And Blueback Herring From Connecticut Waters Extended For Another Year
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced that the prohibition on the taking of alewives and blueback herring from most inland and marine waters of the State of Connecticut has been extended for another year. This action was initially taken in April of 2002, and then continued each successive year through March 31, 2009. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced that two Wild Turkey Hunting Safety Seminars are scheduled. One will take place on Saturday, April 4, 2009, from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the Fairfield County Fish and Game Club, 14 Walker Hill Road, in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. Participants for this seminar are asked to bring their own shotgun and the ammunition that they intend to use to hunt turkeys in order to pattern their shotguns on site. The other seminar will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2009, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Cabela’s, 475 East Hartford Blvd., in East Hartford. Participants should NOT bring their own shotguns and ammunition to the seminar at Cabela’s because there is no shooting range on site.

Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Gina McCarthy has joined officials of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in issuing the Housatonic River Basin Draft Natural Resource Restoration Plan, Environmental Assessment and Environmental Impact Evaluation for Connecticut – collectively the Draft Plan. The Draft Plan puts forward a preferred alternative that identifies 27 projects for which funding is recommended.
