DEP and Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station Announce the Presence of Emerald Ash Borer in Saugerties, New York

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) today announced that federal agricultural officials have confirmed the presence of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in nearby Saugerties, New York (about 25 miles from the CT border).  EAB is an extremely destructive plant pest and it is responsible for the death and decline of over 25 million ash trees in the United States in urban and forested settings since June 2002.  EAB should not be confused with the Asian Longhorned beetle, recently discovered in the Boston and Worcester areas of Massachusetts.

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Friends of Dinosaur State Park and Arboretum will host a celebration of the discovery of 2,000 early Jurassic dinosaur footprints in Rocky Hill on Saturday, August 21, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The tracks were made 200 million years ago by large carnivorous dinosaurs and were discovered in 1966 by a bulldozer operator who was digging the basement of a state office building.

Superior Court Judge Issues Judgment against Owner of Illegal Seawall in Norwalk

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced that a court has entered a judgment requiring a Norwalk man to remove an illegally built seawall, restore damaged tidal wetlands at the site and pay a civil penalty of $75,000. The motion for a judgment, filed in Harford Superior Court, stems from construction of seawalls by Scott P. Merrell at his property at 6 Woodland Road, Norwalk.

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Marine Fisheries Division will be holding two informational meetings to update lobstermen on the recent activities of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) American Lobster Technical Committee and Management Board. Potential management actions proposed for the Southern New England lobster stock, which includes Long Island Sound and all other areas south of Cape Cod, will be discussed. Significant management actions, including consideration of a five year ban on lobster harvest in this region, are being considered by ASMFC in light of the latest stock assessment which declared the stock depleted and in need of rebuilding.

On Monday July 5, 2010, ozone levels may reach "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" (Code Orange) across southern Connecticut with the onset of the first heat wave of this summer. The heat will continue to dominate Connecticut and the northeast through the rest of the holiday weekend and much of this week. DEP Initiates Process to Reissue General Permit for Nitrogen Discharges in Wastewater from Treatment Plants

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has initiated the process to reissue the General Permit that regulates the amount of nitrogen that can be discharged in wastewater from 79 municipal sewage treatment plants in the state.  Nitrogen is a nutrient that spurs algae growth in Long Island Sound and, in excess, creates unhealthy conditions for fish and other aquatic organisms.

DEP Boating Enforcement Effort Results in 4 Arrests over Weekend

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Police today announced it made four arrests over the weekend for Boating Under the Influence (BUI), as part of "Operation Drywater," a nationwide effort to curb boating under the influence.  EnCon Police said two arrests were made on the lower Connecticut River and two were made on Candlewood Lake during the annual fireworks display.  The endeavor also resulted in nine citations for various boating safety violations.

Changes Made to the Connecticut Duck Stamp

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today that the hunting privileges associated with the Connecticut Migratory Bird Conservation Stamp (Duck Stamp) are changing to a calendar year, January 1 through December 31. To facilitate this change, for the remainder of calendar year 2010 and 2011, the DEP will issue a 2010-2011 Duck Stamp with privileges that begin on July 1, 2010 and end on December 31, 2011. Starting in 2012, duck hunting privileges will be for a calendar year, January 1 through December 31. This change is due to legislation passed in April 2010 by the Connecticut State Legislature. The legislation also increased the cost of the Duck Stamp to $13.

Sightings of Deer Fawns Increasing

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is reminding residents to leave deer fawns alone if they discover one and believe it to be abandoned.  In June, white-tailed deer are giving birth to fawns across the state.  With the advent of warm weather, more people are participating in outdoor activities, increasing the chances that someone will come across a tiny fawn.  The fawn may appear to have been deserted, but that is usually not the case. The DEP Wildlife Division has been receiving an increasing number of phone calls from people concerned about finding fawns that appear to be orphaned or abandoned.

2010 Spring Wild Turkey Hunting Season Opens April 28

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) reminds hunters that the 2010 Connecticut spring wild turkey hunting season runs from April 28 to May 29. In addition to the regular season, there are two special Saturdays, April 17 and 24, which provide an opportunity for youth hunters to learn safe and effective wild turkey hunting techniques. On these days, licensed junior hunters (ages 12-15) with a valid spring season turkey permit can hunt while accompanied by a licensed adult mentor. The mentor may not carry a firearm, and juniors may hunt any state land open to turkey hunting or private land where they have obtained written consent of the landowner.

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has revoked the commercial pesticide supervisor certification of Kenneth Bode, doing business as CPC, LLC and Curly’s Pest Control of East Haven for violating pesticide label requirements and industry standards relating to termite treatments. In addition, the action prevents Bode from operating, managing or controlling a commercial pesticide application business in any capacity and he has been ordered to pay civil penalties in the amount of $7,000.

2010 Midwinter Waterfowl Survey Results

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) conducted the annual Midwinter Waterfowl Survey on January 4, 2010. The survey is conducted throughout the Atlantic Flyway, and is used as an index of long-term wintering waterfowl trends. The Atlantic Flyway is a bird migration route that generally follows the Atlantic Coast of North America and the Appalachian Mountains. The states and Canadian provinces that make up the Atlantic Flyway all participate in the survey. In Connecticut, the survey is conducted from a helicopter and a census is obtained from the coast, the three major river systems, and selected inland lakes and reservoirs.

2009 Connecticut Firearms Deer Season Closes One of the Safest on Record

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced that with the close of the 2009 firearms deer hunting seasons on December 31, 2009, hunters in Connecticut enjoyed a second consecutive deer season without a firearm-related injury. More than 64,000 deer hunting permits are issued annually and deer hunters spend nearly 450,000 days afield each year. The only injury reported in 2009 involved a fall from a tree stand.

DEP Announces Settlements with Bridgeport Energy, LLC for Air Emissions Violations

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced it recently entered into a consent order with Bridgeport Energy, LLC to address past emission violations at the company’s power generating facility in Bridgeport.  The consent order requires Bridgeport Energy to pay a $298,000 civil penalty for the alleged violations.  In addition, Bridgeport Energy has paid $345,500 in past due emission fees and spent close to $1 million on the acquisition and installation of new pollution control equipment to address the violations.

A staple of ghost stories, Hollywood fright films, and, of course, Halloween, bats often conjure up images of terror in the minds of many. However, the reality is that you are unlikely to see many bats flying around by the end of October. At this time of year, most of Connecticut’s bats have settled into their winter homes, or hibernaculas, where they will sleep until spring. And, while the scary images of bats are far from reality, the link between bats and all things terrifying does provide an excellent opportunity to shed some light on these unique mammals.

Shetucket River Habitat Enhancement Project Completed

705 Acres on Skiff Mountain Protected from Development

DEP Reminds State Park Visitors that Fewer Lifeguards on Duty

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today reminded state residents and out of state visitors that with summer winding down and many lifeguards going back to school there are fewer of them on duty at state swimming areas. This weekend there will be no lifeguards at Wadsworth Falls in Middlefield and no lifeguards at Wharton Brook in Wallingford. All state swimming areas will have fewer lifeguards this weekend and some areas do not have lifeguards during the week either. In cases where there are no longer life guards on duty, swimming areas will be posted with signs. As always, persons entering the water should be aware of their swimming abilities and not take unnecessary risks.
